Korkia expands its investment focus into powered land for data centers

Korkia is expanding into powered land as growing data center demand increases the need to connect new electricity consumption with generation, storage and grid infrastructure.

Korkia, an active investor in the energy transition and infrastructure, is expanding its investment focus to powered land for data centers. By combining renewable energy generation and energy storage with grid infrastructure, the company aims to address growing pressure on power systems while supporting the next phase of digital infrastructure growth.

Korkia is currently advancing powered land development projects in Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Chile, while continuing to assess opportunities in its other markets.

The expanded focus builds on Korkia’s existing capabilities as an active investor in the energy transition, and responds to a central challenge facing data center investment: securing sufficient power capacity and grid access. Korkia sees an opportunity to help alleviate grid constraints by connecting data center demand with new renewable generation, battery energy storage and supporting grid infrastructure.

“Access to power is one of the key constraints for new data center investments. At the same time, growing electricity demand is increasing pressure on power systems. This creates an opportunity to invest in renewable power, energy storage and supporting infrastructure that can help meet the needs of data centers while strengthening the wider energy system,” said Mikko Kantero, Executive Vice President, Portfolio Management & Growth at Korkia.

Powered land extends Korkia’s existing investment capabilities

Powered land refers to sites where land and permitting for a data center has been secured or is being advanced, and where access to electricity and grid connection capacity are secured or clearly defined. Renewable energy generation and battery energy storage are often located nearby and integrated into the wider energy infrastructure.

“Through our platform and local partnerships, we can bring together land, permitting, grid access, renewable generation and energy storage. Combining these capabilities can give data center operators a clearer path to power while creating attractive new investment opportunities in energy transition infrastructure,” Mikko Kantero continued.

Korkia’s existing renewable energy asset portfolio provides many of the capabilities needed to originate and advance these opportunities including access to land, grid and permitting expertise through local partners, experience with renewable generation and storage, investment discipline, and active portfolio management across several markets.

Korkia currently has a 15 GW advanced portfolio spanning assets in utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage and powered land for data centers, providing a strong foundation for identifying and advancing powered land investment opportunities.
