Korkia sells 125 MW Kukonkylä battery energy storage project in Finland to Enlight

Korkia's development company Korkia Semecon Finland Renewables has completed the sale of the Ready-to-Build 125 MW Kukonkylä battery energy storage project in Sievi, one of the largest publicly announced BESS projects in Finland.

The acquisition adds a large-scale, ready-to-build project to Enlight’s Finnish energy storage portfolio and strengthens its broader European platform.

Korkia Semecon Finland Renewables, a joint venture between Korkia and Semecon, has completed the sale of the ready-to-build Kukonkylä battery energy storage system (BESS) project to Enlight Renewable Energy Ltd, a leading global renewable energy developer and independent power producer.

Located in Sievi, Northern Ostrobothnia, Kukonkylä is a 125 MW standalone BESS project and one of the largest publicly announced projects of its kind in Finland.

“The battery storage market is growing globally, and utility-scale storage is becoming a critical part of supporting renewable energy growth. With forecasts pointing to a five to fifteenfold increase in global capacity by 2030, Korkia saw this development early and has built an impressive portfolio of over 9 GW of battery storage projects in just over 3 years. Kukonkylä is a prime example of what that positioning and our operating model delivers. We can allocate capital fast and seize opportunities when they arise,” said Pauli Mäenpää, Group CEO of Korkia.

Korkia made its investment decision on the project in November 2024 and brought it to ready-to-build status just six months later, in May 2025. Under Enlight’s ownership, Kukonkylä is set to connect to Finland’s transmission grid by the first half of 2028, positioning the facility to play a key role as the country’s share of wind and solar power continues to rise.

“Kukonkylä represents an important addition to Enlight’s energy storage portfolio in Finland and strengthens our broader European platform,” said Adi Leviatan, CEO of Enlight. “Europe’s transition to a power system with a greater share of renewable generation requires storage assets that can provide flexibility at scale, and Kukonkylä is well positioned to contribute to that need. We appreciate the work Korkia and Semecon have done to bring the project to ready-to-build status and look forward to applying Enlight’s experience and capabilities as we advance it through its next phase.”

“Kukonkylä supports Finland’s renewable energy production, giving the grid the flexibility it needs as renewable capacity keeps growing. Beyond this project, Korkia is advancing a broader pipeline of solar, wind and battery storage projects across Finland and Sweden. We thank Semecon and the municipality of Sievi for their cooperation throughout the project, and Enlight for a smooth and efficient process,” said Petri Haataja, VP, Nordics at Korkia.

With one of the largest independent European development pipelines, comprising over 160 projects across eight countries and 15 GW of renewable energy and energy storage projects in mid or late-stage development, Korkia is a global investor and developer of utility-scale solar PV, battery energy storage and onshore wind projects.

Korkia and Semecon were advised on the transaction by EY-Parthenon Corporate Finance and HPP Attorneys.
