nefco biodiversity pilot programme

Korkia participates in Nefco’s Biodiversity Pilot Programme

Korkia is participating in Nefco’s Biodiversity Pilot Programme, which supports Nordic small and medium-sized companies in integrating biodiversity considerations into business operations and decision-making.

Nefco’s second Biodiversity Pilot Programme supports companies in turning biodiversity management into business value and future-proofing their operations. Nefco, the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation, is an international financial institution established by the Nordic countries to finance green projects. Korkia is participating in the programme alongside six other Nordic companies.

As biodiversity loss is increasingly recognized as a systemic business risk, companies play a decisive role in halting nature loss. Building on the outcomes of the first pilot programme (2022–2024), the initiative helps companies identify nature-related risks and opportunities and take concrete action to protect and restore biodiversity.

The programme brings together companies from multiple sectors across the Nordic region to work collaboratively on advancing biodiversity management. Alongside Korkia, the participating companies include Bawat, Fremsyn, Lytefire, Merus Power, TM Systems and VÄXA odling i Sverige.

The programme is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and is part of Nefco’s broader work to accelerate the green transition among Nordic companies. Ramboll supports the programme by providing expert guidance throughout the pilot.

In addition, Nefco and Korkia have an ongoing financing partnership. In late 2024, Nefco announced a EUR 5 million loan to support Korkia’s expansion in renewable energy and energy storage. The financing strengthens Korkia’s capacity to scale projects that contribute to the green transition.

Integrating biodiversity into Korkia’s sustainability work

“Participation in Nefco’s Biodiversity Pilot Programme supports our efforts to further integrate biodiversity considerations into our activities and strengthen our understanding of nature-related risks and opportunities,” says Sofia Kujala, Legal Counsel & Compliance Officer at Korkia.

Korkia integrates sustainability considerations throughout its investment lifecycle, from initial screening and due diligence to project development and monitoring. While investments in utility-scale renewable energy directly support climate change mitigation, Korkia also recognises the importance of identifying and managing environmental and social risks associated with project development.

In autumn 2025, Korkia conducted its first Double Materiality Assessment in line with EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Through workshops with internal experts and external advisors, the assessment identified and prioritised key environmental, social and governance topics, providing a foundation for the continued development of Korkia’s sustainability strategy, targets and disclosures.

Building on this work, Korkia has defined a sustainability roadmap structured around five themes, including enhancing the living planet.
