Solar and BESS Project in North Hertfordshire achieves final important development milestone

The secured planning permission is the first of a pipeline of projects for Korkia and Evolution Power in the United Kingdom.

Korkia and development partner Evolution Power have successfully secured planning permission for Wandon End Solar, a 49.9 MWp solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in North Hertfordshire.

This marks the first approved project in the partnership’s expanding pipeline of renewable energy developments across the UK. A decision on Stonestreet Green Solar, a 160 MWp solar and 100 MW BESS project located in Kent, is expected later in 2025.

We are delighted to have worked with Evolution Power to achieve this milestone and are excited by what the project can deliver. The project is located close to Luton Airport and has potential to generate sufficient energy to supply 19,000 homes, whilst also continuing to act as a home for livestock grazing,” said Peter Bolton, Vice President, Portfolio Investments and Country Manager for UK at Korkia.

Major pipeline projects advancing in the UK

Korkia and Evolution Power have built a project portfolio extending beyond the recently approved Wandon End Solar project. In addition to several similarly sized distribution grid projects in development, Korkia and Evolution Power have progressed three large transmission grid opportunities under the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) process.

These NSIP projects are all strategically located in southern England and collectively represent over 2.5GW of solar generation capacity and approaching 2GW of co-located BESS capacity. Evolution Power has experience of the NSIP planning approval process from its Stonestreet Green Solar project.

Korkia’s international project portfolio continues to expand

Korkia, an international developer and investor in renewable energy, has a project portfolio comprising over 150 solar, wind, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects. Korkia’s business model emphasizes co-development with local partners, leveraging regional expertise and market knowledge. Today, Korkia is one of Europe’s largest and fastest-growing companies in the field of renewable energy with an expanding and maturing renewable energy portfolio across nine countries.

Energy supply for households calculated with Ofgem’s estimate of typical British households’ consumption 2,700 kWh/year: 48.9MWp (capacity) * 1,049 kWh/kWp (specific yield) = 51,296 MWhs solar generation per annum.
