Korkia secures Power Plant Approvals for two solar projects in Alberta, Canada

The approvals for the 268 MWac and 162 MWac projects mark a major milestone and move them decisively closer to construction readiness and eventual commercial operation.

Korkia has secured Power Plant Approval (PPAs) from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for two utility-scale solar PV projects in Alberta, Canada: the 268 MWac Uk Solar East and the 162 MWac UK Solar West projects located in the County of Oyen. The approvals mark a major milestone for both projects and move them decisively closer to construction readiness and eventual commercial operation.

Power Plant Approval is the key regulatory authorization required to construct and operate power generation assets in Alberta. Issued by the AUC, it confirms that a project has been assessed against technical, environmental, land use, and public interest requirements. For renewable energy projects, receiving a PPA represents a significant de-risking step, enabling progress toward final investment decisions, financing, and execution.

Once operational, UK Solar East and UK Solar West are expected to generate an estimated 850,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to supply power to more than 70,000 Alberta households each year. The projects underscore the continued momentum of renewable energy development in Alberta, even amid evolving regulatory and market conditions.

“This approval is not only important for us, but for the industry as a whole,” said Kristina Sweet, Country Manager for Canada at Korkia. “These projects advanced during a period of major transition and transformation in Alberta’s power sector, demonstrating what collaboration and determination can accomplish in a changing landscape.”

Investing in a renewable future with one of Alberta’s largest late-phase solar portfolios

Continuing to invest in and progress a 1.5 GW development portfolio through shifting market conditions underscores Korkia’s long‑term confidence in Alberta and commitment to continuing to deliver impactful renewable energy solutions in the province.

Korkia is a global investor and developer of utility-scale solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and onshore wind projects. With a global pipeline comprising more than 150 projects across eight countries, approximately 14 GW of projects are in mid- or late-phase development.

In early 2026, Korkia has already announced additional milestone achievements across its international portfolio, including one of Finland’s first renewable energy hybrid projects reaching ready-to-build and the sale of two fully permitted solar PV projects in Northern Italy. These milestones further demonstrate Korkia’s ability to advance projects across multiple markets and technologies, from development through execution.
