About the Solar Project

Northern Renewables Ltd. is the proponent of the proposed Little Smoky 1 solar power plant project. The company is now managed directly by Korkia, a privately owned renewable energy company with years of experience developing and operating renewable energy projects in Canada and internationally.

Little Smoky 1 Solar Project is located on 2,786 acres of land, approximately 10 kilometers (km) north of the hamlet of Little Smoky, Alberta, in the Municipal District of Greenview. The proposed Project consists of a 448 megawatt (MW) solar power plant.

The project is located in an area of Alberta with strong solar resources, and will generate clean energy over its expected 35 year lifetime.

The Little Smoky 1 was previously submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for approval and was denied permitting by the AUC on March 17, 2026.

Local Employment

The Project will create approximately 300 direct and indirect jobs during construction, creating opportunities for local individuals and businesses. During operations, the Project will provide up to 35 long-term operational roles.

Local Economic Boost

Local businesses will experience increased activity due to the spin-off opportunities created by the Project during development, construction, and operations. 

Property Taxes

The Project will pay annual property taxes to the Municipality, resulting in financial benefits to the community. The Project will result in approximately $100 million in municipal tax revenue over the 35 year project life.

Clean Energy Generation

The Project will generate emissions-free  electricity for approximately 43,000 to 55,000 homes annually.

Project Components

Solar Panel Modules​

Bifacial solar photovoltaic (PV) modules are double-sided and transform sunlight into electrical energy on both its front and back sides. Single-axis tracker systems follow the path of the sun to maximize electricity production.

Inverter stations and step-up transformers​

Inverters are electrical devices that convert direct current (DC) produced by the PV panels to alternating current (AC) used on the grid. Transformers are electrical equipment that increase or decrease the voltage within the solar PV facility. Underground collector lines of 34.5 kilovolt (kV) will be used to connect inverter/transformer stations.
