Korkia advances its Romanian renewable energy portfolio with 320 MW grid connection permits secured

Korkia has achieved a key development milestone in its Romanian renewable energy portfolio, with issuance of technical grid connection permits (ATR) for a cluster of 320 MW solar PV and 303 MW BESS.

Technical grid connection permits (Aviz Tehnic de Racordare, “ATR”) were issued in March 2026, for the Alexandria portfolio of solar PV and co-located battery storage projects, situated in southern Romania’s Teleorman County. This portfolio consists of three hybrid solar PV and storage projects, with a total solar PV generation capacity of 320 MW and a total battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity of 303 MW.

The projects benefit from high solar irradiation and favourable grid connection terms due to their proximity to a grid connection point. The projects have approval to connect to the grid and begin injecting power as early as 2028, without the need for reinforcements to the transmission power system. The Alexandria portfolio is on track to reach Ready-to-Build status (RTB) by the end of 2026.

By securing grid connection permits (ATRs) under the existing framework, the projects benefit from a clear and established connection pathway, avoiding the increased competition and regulatory uncertainty associated with the upcoming changes to Romania’s grid connection regime. The new framework being introduced in 2026 will involve a competitive auction-based allocation process, aimed at clearing the grid connection queue of speculative applications by imposing higher financial commitments and stricter development progression deadlines.

Concerning the next portfolio in Korkia’s Romanian pipeline, ATRs are on track to be issued soon for the Iron Gates portfolio, which consists of two hybrid solar and energy storage projects, with a total of 268 MW solar PV capacity and 250 MW BESS capacity. The projects are situated the Caraș-Severin County of western Romania.

Romania is positioned to become a power hub in Central and Eastern Europe

Romania has emerged as one of the fastest-growing renewable energy markets in Central and Eastern Europe, supported by rising electricity demand, two decades of strong economic growth and stability. The country is pushing forward with its ambitious plans towards decarbonisation, as well as its pursuit of OECD membership.

Korkia entered the Romanian market in 2024 through a partnership with local renewable energy developer Econous Green Energy

“Securing grid connection permits for the Alexandria portfolio is an important milestone for our Romanian platform, de-risking our projects at a time when incoming grid reforms may cause some turbulence in an otherwise stable market” said Michael Roussos, Country Manager for Romania at Korkia.

“Romania is a highly conducive market for the growth of renewable energy. However, only the best projects will succeed. Together with our partner Econous Green Energy, we are building a strong pipeline of quality projects that support the country’s energy transition, at a time when energy security and autonomy is of paramount importance.”

Korkia’s global mature development pipeline of 15 GW

Romania represents an important part of Korkia’s international renewable energy portfolio, which spans multiple technologies and markets across Europe and the Americas. By combining local development expertise with Korkia’s global platform, these partnerships aim to bring high-quality renewable energy assets to the market, supporting the decarbonisation of Europe’s power system.

In 2026 alone, Korkia has achieved multiple development milestones across its global portfolio, including environmental approval for a 150 MW BESS project in Chile, one of Finland’s first hybrid projects reaching ready-to-build status and two solar projects securing Power Plant Approval in Alberta, Canada. In addition, the company has exited two fully-permitted solar PV projects and a 10.7 MW portfolio of solar PV assets in northern Italy.

Korkia’s renewable energy portfolio currently comprises 15 GW mature and 9 GW of early-stage utility-scale solar, wind, and energy storage (BESS) development assets in Europe, North America and South America.
